My dad, the late Joseph William Dawley, was a renowned oil painter who started his career studying the masters, but was forced to switch to impressionism when early onset Parkinsons robbed him of his fine motor skills. Contrary to popular belief, I did not spend much time in his studio. As a matter of fact, that being his place of work, my sister and I were forbidden in there. This was actually a publicity photo.
Needless to say, between genetics and growing up surrounded by 6-12 paintings per room in our house, art somehow seeped into my bloodstream. I did not go to school for art, nor did I dream of being an artist. I tried to resist the artistic urges, but by the time I was nearing my mid twenties it got the best of me. I was lucky to have access to supplies, and to an expert artist for the rare occasions that I would actually ask for advice (who listens to their dad?).
I quickly discovered that I had skill. Cool... not sure how it happened... but I do know it makes me happy. I realize that sounds very simple or trite, maybe I should use the word "accomplished", but I do know that I get very impassioned by certain subjects, as well as by colors and light.
Everyone has a unique path that takes them on their journey through life. Art is quite subjective, and, as such, it has taught me to follow my instincts and create what I like and hope others like it, too - so far, so good.

I am represented in several art galleries and my paintings hang in a number of beautiful private collections. I have also had some corporate recognition, such as Cartier using one of my images as their corporate holiday card, Colavita commissioning works for sauce labels, and the Sopranos using my art for a couple of seasons.
To sum it up, I was genetically predisposed to being an artist, I fought it, I lost that battle, I embraced it, and I continue to love every colorful minute of my life.
